Our Story
2005
Humble Beginnings
El Rio Grande Latin Market was founded in 2005 in Dallas with a single store on Maple Avenue, born from a simple but powerful vision: bring fresh, affordable, culturally authentic Latin foods to underserved neighborhoods across DFW.
Shalabi, raised in East Dallas and influenced by his family’s small-store retail background, recognized early on that many Hispanic communities lacked access to full-service grocery stores offering culturally relevant products at fair prices.

Establishing a Cultural Grocery Model
During its first decade, El Rio Grande refined a hybrid grocery concept that blended:
- Full-service supermarket operations
- Traditional Latin departments (carnicería, panadería, cocina)
- Bilingual signage and culturally immersive store design
- This model distinguished El Rio Grande from smaller ethnic grocers while remaining accessible and community-focused.
El Rio Grande expanded into key Hispanic population centers across the metroplex, opening stores in: Grand Prairie, West Jefferson Blvd. (Oak Cliff), Miller Ave. (Garland) and Fort Worth.
